About the Play

A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. "He doesn't stand a chance," mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case—until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts. With each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted, and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become 12 angry people.

Tentative Schedule

Rehearsals are tentatively planned for Monday-Thursday evenings December 9-20. Actors will have no rehearsals December 23 – January 3. Rehearsals will begin again with Monday-Friday evenings January 6-30.

FOREMAN OF THE JURY

Any gender, any age. Small and petty. Impressed by the authority they have, they handle themselves formally. Not overly bright but dogged.

JUROR NO. FOUR

Any gender, any age. A person of wealth and position, and a practiced speaker who presents themselves well at all times. Seems to be a little above the rest of the jurors, appalled with the behavior of others.

JUROR NO. SEVEN

Any gender, any age. Loud, flashy, glad-handed salesman type who has more important things to do. They are quick to show temper, and quick to form opinions about which they know nothing. A bully and a coward.

JUROR NO. TEN

Any gender, any age. Angry and bitter, someone who antagonizes almost at sight. A bigot who places no value on any human life save their own. They have been nowhere and are going nowhere, and they know it deep down.

GUARD

Any gender, any age.  A bit part.

JUROR NO. TWO

Any gender, any age. Meek and hesitant. Easily swayed, usually adopting the opinion of the last person they have spoken with.

JUROR NO. FIVE

Any gender, 20-35. A naïve, frightened young person who takes their obligations very seriously. But finds it difficult to speak up when the elders have the floor.

JUROR NO. EIGHT

M, any age. A quiet, thoughtful, gentle man who sees all sides of every question and constantly seeks the truth. A man of strength tempered with compassion, and above all he is a man who seeks justice and will fight for it.

JUROR NO. ELEVEN

Any gender, any age. A refugee from Europe, speaking with an accent. Ashamed, humble, and almost subservient. They will honestly seek justice because of their suffered injustice.

JUDGE

Any gender, any age. Off-stage voice.

JUROR NO. THREE

M, any age. Very strong, forceful, and opinionated. Humorless and intolerant of opinions other than his own, accustomed to forcing his opinion and view on others.

JUROR NO. SIX

Any gender, any age. An honest but dull-witted person who comes upon their decisions slowly and carefully. They find it difficult to create positive opinions but must listen to and digest and accept those opinions offered to them.

JUROR NO. NINE

Any gender, 70-90. Mild and gentle, an older person long since defeated by life, now merely waiting to die. They recognize themselves for what they are and mourn the days when it would have been possible to be courageous without shielding themselves behind their many years.

JUROR NO. TWELVE

Any gender, any age. Slick, bright advertiser who thinks of humans in terms of percentages, graphs, and polls. Has no real understanding of people and is a superficial snob, but is trying to be a good person.

CLERK

Any gender, any age. Off-stage voice.

Audition Tips

It’s okay to be nervous!

Just about everyone is nervous. Do your best to smile and have a good time. Take a deep breath and slow yourself down - trying to rush through the words will often lead to mistakes!

Be on time.

We want to know that you’re punctual and reliable. A good rule to live by: if you’re 5 minutes early, you’re on time. If you’re “on time,” you’re late.

Research.

Find out what you can about the play and the characters. Read a summary of the play before the audition.

Be kind to everyone and smile.

Remember that your audition is like an interview, and it begins the moment you walk in the door.
